Beanie level: Errand boy

I love the aura this actress gives off in every drama she stars in- Buamdong Social Club,Jugglers and now in Witch’s Love! Spotting her everywhere in her slo-mo glory.

Started watching Witch’s Love after it was featured in DB’s What We’re Watching and I’m loving it’s light tone. It’s like a cross between Sabrina the Teenage Witch (minus Salem the talking cat) and Bewitched. Also this is one savage granny! 👌

I did the same thing and found it’s pretty cute. Especially that granny! I love her in every role. I have company this weekend and was stealing time to watch. I’ll finish more eps later.

The granny has had supporting roles in so many dramas now that she’s endearing every time she’s on my screen. I love how the magic is cute instead of world destroying.

Oh, I love Bewitched. Definitely keeping my eye on this one.

It has a whimsical vibe similar to that and I’m loving it’s fluff and musical cues so far.

    I’m sad there’s no Salem, though 🙁

I think I’ll first finish LOM because I couldn’t and then switch to Life, Let’s Eat 3 and 30 but 17. People seem to like those a lot.

Yes!! Finish of Life on mars first and then start with Life. I’m loving Thirty but seventeen more than Lets eat 3.

I’ve arrived back to the land of wifi! *does a wild celebratory dance*
It’s been so long that I even forgot my DB password. *shakes head*

Me: WOHOO I’m back!
Friend:Why?? It’s a gazillion degrees outside! Plus the humidity is intense. Do you still want to come?
Me: *flashes back to not being able to live watch dramas, the mosquitoes and zero connection to the outside world*

So I’m off to holiday at the land of no wifi.
Might not see my fellow beanies or binge dramas for about a month. That just makes everything more angsty.

Oh no! Well, maybe a drama and internet detox will be a good thing? People say it’s a good thing… but I don’t really believe them.

Ms.Hammurabi’s Amazingness

Oh Ruem: “The law should be unbending towards to the strong and merciful to the weak”
Judge: “But what is considered strong and what is considered weak?”

Ep 12 was so incredibly perceptive and thought provoking. South Korea has the 17th highest alochol consumption in the world (WHO) and the 1st in Asia so choosing this ep to feature the problems society has to deal with over-drinking was very reflective. Whenever I watched Hello Councelor I’d get so frustrated because even though alcholism was a concern 80% of the time most people would nudge it aside as being acceptable despite it having adverse affects on the children and society.

I identify with Ba Reun’s belief that one cannot get away with crimes by blaming it on alochol, because you are responsible for your own actions and alochol serves merely as a trigger. Others tried to highlight that drinking is part of the culture that revolves around “masculinity”, “respect towards elders” and “pride” but he threw it back at Oh Ruem by calling her out and stating that “I’m old, poor and a man” is not and could not be used as an excuse because merely tolerating it gives them the unfair “power” that she so hated.

I loved how Presiding Judge Han talked about overcrowding within prisons and how 1 year itself had detrimental effects to mental health and how Oh Ruem was so introspective:

Perhaps that’s what poverty is. It’s close to us, but it’s invisible to those who aren’t poor.

DAMN that hit me hard because of how often people choose to ignore the desperate. Not to mention the elderly all clamped up in a depressive neighbourhood. I wanted to give that old halmoni who wanted to speak to young people, a hug.The fact that the drama considered the human aspect and rehab was also commendable as was the unfairness of the rich having so much power that even the law is deflected( Life On Mars recently touched this too.) I wanted to give everyone a hug, especially Ba Ruen

I’ve written so much because MH despite it’s road-bumps with it’s clunky writing at times is still splendid and honestly, opens my eyes to the human motivations so rarely covered. It deserves to be dissected because of how amazing it’s heart is.

15
9

YES! Absolutely adored this episode! And the way Ba Reun is with is Omma is totally precious! Also when he broke down in the end when comparing the two 5 year sentences was HEARTBREAKING!

    3
    1

Exactly! Him asking his mom to clean his ears was so adorable. His mom is such an angel.

I knowww! They’ve got such a good dynamic!

        2
        1

And the fact that he always buys her a treat is sweet too. He’s so mushy.

          1
          1

Yeaah! He’s one of the best ‘gruff-on-the-outside-mushy-on-the-inside’ characters I’ve seen in a while. Plus L plays him so well – I’m genuinely impressed!

            2

“I identify with Ba Reun’s belief that one cannot get away with crimes by blaming it on alochol, because you are responsible for your own actions and alochol serves merely as a trigger.”

So curious – what was the crime and was the accused let off?

    1
    1

The crime was an old harabeoji had been violent under intoxication. So he hit the ahjumma from the shop with a soju bottle and had 26 such previous convictions related to drinking.

I love how this show tackles important issues that are still relevant today. I just heard a piece on NPR: people with mental disabilities charged with misdemeanor crimes are put in jail instead of providing treatment.

Everyone watching LOM was looking for this end-preview song and it’s finally out!

So I’ve successfully caught up with LOM and MH, yet some unimaginable force keeps preventing me from hitting play for WWWSK. It seems like I have to let the drama go or place it on an infinite pause.

    Same here *shakes head*

    4
    1

I don’t get it. I love the com part and the rom part is nice too so I’m not sure if it’s because the brother side plot is eh or if the tropes (eg. the accidental slips/falls) are too much for me.

      3
      1

@kudoran commented that it’s not doing anything exceptional. It’s using the same old plots & tropes – which might be why some of us aren’t feeling it. I have to say I agree, and also that I think the drama is relying too heavily on the actors Park Min Young and Park Seo Joon and not enough on anything else. :/

        1
        1

Yes it’s probably what you pointed out because other fluffy rom-coms like LUTYN and WLFKBJ had elements of originality mixed in with poignancy, chemistry and genuine heart instead of just chemistry+tropes.

          2
          3

If it wasn’t for Park Min Young and Park Seo Joon, I’m sure a lot more Beanies would be honest about this drama, this isn’t one of the best rom-com out there.
It lacks originality, I’m used to rom-com I can still enjoy them even with tropes involved but it needs a PLOT (lol).
For me, Secretary Kim is a pale rom-com copy. Funny how each ep makes me remember one of my previous dramas pwahaha, at this point it’s so pathetic that’s it’s a skill itself hahaha.
Anyway 2 actors can’t carry a whole drama for 16ep, even if I drop it (which will happen ’cause it’s only a schedule filler), I’ll know what happens in the drama with Beanies hype and the fanwall post/gif flood ^^’

            3
            0

@kudoran For me, Secretary Kim is a pale rom-com copy. Funny how each ep makes me remember one of my previous dramas
Spot on! The drama seems to be reusing cliches which after the first 2 eps got a but stale. The 2 stellar actors and the colourful side characters are the only engaging bits. I don’t mind the lack of plot (eg. WFKBJ was an amazing coming-of-age rom-com) if they chose instead to focus on the characters eg.what drove Secretary Kim to be so competent, more about their 9 years past dynamic etc. I understand they’re “still fleshing things out” but maybe the drama’s concept works better in a webtoon where the nuances come across more easily rather than extended periods of numerous slow-mos.

            3
            0

WFKBJ is one of my top10 <3 *swag* hahaha

Honestly, it’s also on hold for me atm. With Prison Playbook, Miss Hammurabi and Life on Mars, my kdrama schedule is full.

All the dramas you’re watching are exceptional! I’ve yet to watch Prison Playbook tho.

I have put it on hold too… t wasn’t working for me even though I like the supporting characters..

Also yay for another Park Shin Hye gif on fanwall!

    3
    0

Liked the first 2 episodes, dropped it after episode 5, but now I must pick it back up for Lee Min-ki and Jung So-min.

It’s a pity because I really like both Park Seo-joon and Park Min-young!

    1
    1

I want to pick it up for the sake of BTIOFL feels but it still doesn’t draw me in especially since my July schedule will be packed anyway.

Ms.Hammurabi making me laugh and cry all in the same episode. Ep11 was a real jewel. I had no idea how severe and widespread glue addiction amongst youngsters were. Also Ba Reun’s dimples seem to have struck someones heart.

16
9

I really appreciate the cases in Miss Hammurabi like this one in ep 11. Glue sniffing is a bigger problem than other addictions because it’s easily available and cheap. I just wish the story telling was more subtle so as not to take away from the stories. They alone are impactful enough

    4
    1

I agree with the subtlety because that’s the only thing missing from Ms.Hammurabi. The story telling would’ve been elevated to outstanding if some of the glossiness was removed but I still love how compact each ep is in relating the emotions of problems that are not only widespread in Korea but around the world (when the drama doesn’t focus on the overbearing court politics). I’ve never seen a kdrama tackle glue addiction before and it seems like the next ep will take on alcholism- a really huge issue. I’m glad Oh Reum has recognised her flaws tho because it’s a step in the right direction

      2

I gotta catch up! I gotta! Thank you for giving me the motivation.

    1
    1

You should. Ep 9 was a roadbump for me because it was kinda eh in comparison but ep 10 was great and 11 fantastic

      1
      1

I heard ep 9 wasn’t great, which is why I delayed watching.. but I’m glad to see it’s back on track! I didn’t want to lose my love for it!

        1
        1

So 9 took ages to ge through because of how over bearing Oh Uem was being but towards the end there was wonderful growth for bareun which was an eye opener.

          1
          1

I meant to post on this earlier, but your post reminded me. Earlier in the series, I found L’s smiles to be lacking. A smile is more than just your mouth. They looked very awkward and fake at times. In these last few episodes though, his smiles seem way more natural and satisfying. So I’m wondering what sequence these scenes were shot in and if this episode of him working on his smile actually helped.

    1
    1

I think the awkwardness in the initial eps was because he wasn’t used to the set and wasn’t fully in the role but now he’s probably more comfortable around the cast and his character. The actors performances really have elevated recently. Not quite as clunky

LOM Ep 8

I don’t know if I’m supposed to be mindblown, shocked or confused at that ending because I’m all 3. LOM is officially classified as this fantastical, trippy, addictive mixture.

25
4

Yes, Trippy is exactly the word for it!

    2
    1

Can you believe it’s not airing next week? I’m happy that the cast get a short vacay tho for their outstanding performances.

      1
      1

        And after that ending 😭
I’ll just be in shock for 2 weeks, but if they need a break to continue with the brilliance… they should by all means proceed

        2
        1

I’ll join you in your shock. That ending was the trippiest thing so far in all the eps.

          1
          0

I’ve given up trying to reason with my brain. I finally have the hols to sit back comfortably to watch endless dramas to my heart’s content. But NOPE it decides now is the best time to get into a drama slump. LOM is the only drama I love whilst Hammurabi and WWSK don’t grip me anymore even tho I love(d) it. I’m so done.

20
7

Aw nooo, Andy! So sorry to hear that! Hope it ends soon!

    1
    0

I have the same problem. Dramas always seem so much more interesting when I don’t have time to watch them.

    5
    1

Exactly. Now that I have time I’m always on youtube watching random vids

      1
      1

I do the exact same thing!!! I could probably watch 3 or 4 hours of dramas every day if I didn’t go on youtube and db 😄

        0
        1

😂 We’re very alike then. I think I spend around 2 hours on DB most days and even when there’s no activity I still refresh.

          2
          0

Don’t worry, watching only one drama doesn’t count as a slump… Hopefully… Otherwise I live in a perpetual slump.

Did you get to watch Nirvana in Fire?

    2
    1

I didn’t start it yet. As soon as I’m done catching up with my other dramas I’ll get to it. Most beanies seem to rave about NiF so high hopes here.

I’ll always love this group slayage and how the 3 contestants came out of their shells and impressed everybody, including Ailee.

One of my favourite reveals ever. That sly smirk in the middle was all like “you eliminated me? I’ll show you real talent!” Skip to 0:30 for the start of song brilliance 🙌

The bar manager in Life On Mars is my new fav. He plays Sarang in the background when Tae Joo and Officer Yoon pour each other drinks. He’s shipping them too! Also I will forever love this video. They eliminated her because they thought she couldn’t sing but DAMN, she gave me goosebumps. Skip to 0:25 for the beginning of her snazzy KCJ rendition. 💖

I know I’m supposed to revise instead of laze my time away on DB but after congratulating @seralovestteobokki (whose now an entertainer and a DB legend!) I found out out that I too have levelled up to a fugitive! *runs happy laps* JH is me whenever beanies level up.

Secretary Kim’s competence runs in the DNA. No wonder Young Joon’s impressed!

The BTS for Life On Mars seems like so much fun! They even made it look old fashioney with the video style and the karaoke lyrics to Nami playing the in the background. 💕
