Watching her, watch him

It was a beautiful scene.. His awareness and his jealousy..

    6
    2

We need more shadow scenes pining for her this time around!

I honestly feel like even on stage he does like her. He just didn’t want to, refraining himself to fully care for him because of his father’s push on their relationship. It’s a sick plot this writer is creating… I don’t think we’ve seen Baek Kyung’s complete “secret” yet.

      5

I can’t handle his disappointed look!! It hurts!!
        Ah. I got it bad.

To be honest, I really don’t like him as a character. At all. He’s just too much of a jerky asshole to her. I don’t much care for whether he likes her or not; after all of the bullshit he’s done to her, I feel like he should just suffer in purgatory, watching her as she loves (and is love by) somebody else.

I confess, though, that some of my antipathy is due to me being totally on Team Ha-ru (I think they have really great chemistry in this show). I feel like disliking Baek-kyung is an ineluctable consequence of liking shipping Ha-ru with Dan-oh.

On a complete side note, I think Jae-wook’s acting in this show is amazing.

        2
        0

Ahhhhh Maqqqqq @smaltwalt I agree with you 100% I’m completely in love with Haru and the way their love story is unfolding honestly brings me butterflies.

The fact that we’re still rooting for BK is just a confirmation of what the writer is trying to tell us – how we’ve grown so accustomed to the jerk falling for the kind girl, we don’t stop to realize how much damage that kind of behaviour has on someone.

Dan-Oh does not owe him anymore of her affection after everything she’s been through. Even if that was his stage persona, the damage has been done and SO I’M GLAD DAN-OH DECIDED TO MOVE ON AND FIND SOMEONE ELSE. Someone she deserves and treats her the right away aka Haru.

Plus, her choice to love Haru is her own and dictated by the ‘fate’ of the manhwa. I will admit though I’m much more sympathetic to drama BK than the webtoon solely because of Lee Jae Wook <3

      1
      1

Oh, I love Lee Jae-wook too! I actually think it’s proof of how great an actor he is that I’m so fired about what a piece of shit his character is.

Ha-ru and Dan-oh are so cute! I love their interactions. Their characters are also very interesting; Dan-oh seems forthright about her feelings than the typical female lead character, and Ha-ru seems more clueless than the typical male lead. I also love how protective Ha-ru is of Dan-oh and how comfortable Dan-oh seems to be around Ha-ru (I found the scenes where she spoke on behalf of Ha-ru hilarious).

Kpop makes it so hard to stan just the art and not the artist behind it.

I was never into kpop until I stumbled onto Bigbang’s Haru Haru by accident last summer and fell into a hole that ended with me having watched every variety and award show appearance of theirs since they debuted, and having all their albums on replay everyday. Their music is truly timeless and universally appealing.

But beyond that, whether I liked it or not, I became invested in them as individuals. I wanted them to do good, stay good. I felt like I knew these kids (read: grown ass men) because I’d followed their journey from their debut documentary to their most recent variety show appearance. I watched them ‘grow up’ in front of my eyes and had unwittingly grown attached. It’s not like they didn’t owe me anything special – just the reassurance that I knew everything, EVERYTHING there was about them.

But I didn’t. No one does. And to believe otherwise is not only creepy but also nonsensical because who even are these people? Are we friends? Do they even know my name?

How do we end up garnering so much love for people we’ve never met in our lives? In our actual lives, we begin to love people as a result of positive interactions, deep connections. How does love for someone’s WORK translate into love for that PERSON?

I feel an urge to say, ‘Daesung, I’m disappointed in you’ like I’d say to a friend I cherished and thought better of. And that thought scares me. Because he’s not a friend. He’s someone I don’t even know. So what are these expectations for? Wasn’t it all about….the “music”??

8
3

I think it’s easy to say it’s just the music but it isn’t that simple if it’s someone that I’ve followed in and out of music. They’re not just singers. Or variety stars. Or in some cases even just actors. I think “idols” are a very apt term for their profession. Someone with an image that we learn to love, befriend, and admire. Someone who has an image and does fanservice. Sometimes these artists and their music or the way they make us smile or laugh during our hard times are the rare bright spots in the day. Once they were the ones that made a difference in how some of us are inspired or motivated to move forward. And I don’t believe any fans should be sideyed for finding strength through kpop and idols. So similarly I don’t think it’s weird that it can swing around to make us feel disappointed. They are idols for a reason.

    2
    0

A big part of the reason Kpop is so popular is because it’s never been just about the music. The creation of K-pop groups has always been about selling people over selling music. They know that if they get their target audience (normally young school girls) attached to a charming group of people close to their age who they feel like they “know”, then they can rely on them continually opening their wallets and supporting them no matter what kind of music they produce. It’s quite an ingenious tactic but also very sad once you think about it.

    2

I see it like friends who live far away. Like you’ve known each other from way back when but one of you moved and have never seen each other since. You get updates from time to time but just never see each other.

It should be okay to say you’re disappointed because you are. Just because other people think it’s crazy for you to care for idols this way, it doesn’t mean they’re right.

Forever in love with how lived-in the homes in Japanese doramas feel <3

12
3

I agree! The homes in Japanese dramas feels more homey~

    4
    0

    what’s a good japanese drama!?

    1
    1

I haven’t watched many – most of the ones I’ve seen are ones that have Korean remakes because I like checking the originals out before the remakes air. I started Hirugao (Love Affairs in the Afternoon) and it’s already so much better than the Korean version – which was just toooooo dull and non-eventful for me.

I think romcom is Japan’s weak point. Their early 2000s dramas were peak romcom (better than ANYTHING airing today) but their modern shows don’t have the same magic.

Am I just a hateful, pessimistic person, or is it a lot easier and enjoyable to write negative reviews than positive ones?

8
6

    Statistically…
..some months it’s *easier* to write a negative review if you don’t like lying.

And what exactly would you call the opposite of a sh*tpost, anyway?

    2
    0

I don’t know… personally, I love talking about the things I love way more than the things I hate.

    8
    1

Me too. I prefer talking about things I like rather than things I hate~ 😊

      3
      1

Occasionaly venting about the things I dislike is a stress reliever. Like what happened with MotA before I stopped bothering about it all together. Ahaha

        3
        0

Same. Writing down my unhappiness is a relieving activity to wash myself of negative feelings and empty my thoughts in a productive and clear way.

Writing positive reviews sometimes I want to keep the feelings of happiness bottled up to sustain me longer so it’s harder to let it go and give words to it.

    Can’t it be both? 🤣

North America (esp Canadian) Netflix SUCKS for kdramas. I am insanely blown away by the UK selection. Too bad you can\’t get VPN on your TV :\'(

I spent 12 dollars getting a VPN BUT IT WAS SO WORTH IT BECAUSE UK NETFLIX IS THE BOMB?!?

I see Healer and Coffee Prince and OOO WEIGHTLIFTING FAIRY?!? Oh my God Sky Castle. Omg Waikiki.

Netflix does not allow VPN access! Please let me know if they are letting you!

    1

Yes and no. I have few problems with NordVPN usually (although sometimes it plays up).

But when it comes to kdrama we’re set over here anyway. We get everything in the UK and possibly more.

      2
      1

Yes! Our Netflix Kdrama list is quite impressive. However Netflix hasn’t allowed me to watch things like Breaking Bad or Friends using a VPN. The VPN I use is basically for Viki.

        1
        2

Try Nord? There’s nothing I really want to watch on the US Netflix so I don’t usually use it. But last time I had no problems using Nord with Netflix.

          2
          0

Yeah, I use Nord and so far it’s pretty good. I think Netflix tries really hard to reject access through VPN so you’d need a pretty powerful one

          2
          1

I use Hide My Ass – which, I must say, I chose because of the name 😀

Watching Prison Playbook is making me realize how mediocre the dramas this year have been GOOD LORD…

The last drama I wholeheartedly enjoyed and liked was Just Dance which was 2018, and the only 2019 dramas I’ve completed so far are Her Private Life and TSOLMS (which I skimmed through)

9
9

    Prison Playbook is so good.
I realized that I watch a lot of fluffy/light dramas this year. Luckily few is alright but haven’t found my best drama yet

    3
    0

The light in your eyes is pretty good if you forget a few episodes in the middle which felt like filler to me. (Just dance was ❤️). I did enjoy beautiful world but i wouldnt place it as my favorite this year yet…. there were some VERY memorable scenes in that show howver if youre looking for something deep rooted, sad, moving and about family.

    2
    1

Beautiful World could’ve been that good. I was hoping it would be the stand out this year.

      1
      1

It had so much potential. And it’s not hard to imagine just tiny ways it couldve been better. But its still good nonetheless.

        2
        0

I guess that is why the kdrama industry thrives. There are always people who will like a show, however mediocre it might feel to somebody else. PP bored me to no end, and I only watched for JKH. And Just Dance is one of the very very few shows I dropped near the end. So far My Fellow Citizens has been the best show this year for me.

Dropped Angel\’s Last Mission

Started Prison Playbook

It\’s a weird switch but life\’s too short to be watching dramas that are driving you up a wall, and after recommending PP to a friend because she wanted a Reply-like show, I decided to start it myself

So far, I really like it. It has that slow, mellow quality to it that endears me so much to Reply ‘88. And it feels retro even though it’s set in modern times (AND I LOVE IT)

I’m not crazy over it yet but I’ve only watched the first episode so far, and I know this one’s going to be a slow yet strong burn.

12

Good choice. I too only watch things I enjoy. I’m not getting any younger. And Prison Playbook is a good one! Enjoy!

I have the latest two episodes of ALML but thinking of dropping it, too. I have yet to watch Prison Playbook but it’s been in my To Be Watched list since it premiered. Let me know how it goes for you.

    Great Choice!

I loved that it was an ensemble cast, and I have a soft spot for ragtags who become like family to each other.
PP was amazing from start to finish, and one of the best dramas last years!
