The drama ‘Kang Mae-gang (Not Very Powerful but Attractive) will reportedly air exclusively on Disney+. It was scheduled to be broadcast in May on SBS, but suffered from frequent programming changes.

I guess this is Kim Dong wook’s first drama after his marriage in December 2023 to writer and former SM Entertainment trainee, Stella Kim. Woohoo can’t wait!

Rewatching scenes like these makes me appreciate what a great actor this young man is! You can see the pain and confusion and the longing in his eyes! All the attention he is getting is so well deserved 🥰

Frankly Speaking Ep. 5-6
These are my seven gifs. Four of them are about Evil Ex™.

Mean to Me
This interview is chilling – they are being so mean to each other. We have seen Mr. Nice turn on a dime whenever the spotlight is not on him, and he is consistent in wearing the face that is practical for him in any given situation, – and still, with what we’ve seen, I am not quite sure whether he is really just the worst psychopathic emotional abuser and potential murderer you could imagine, or whether he is just flawed, but really a guy who for seven years has been trying to make up for not showing his appreciation of his girlfriend enough.
Has he tried to benefit her career for years, now, or is he actually on some unimaginable revenge trip that includes luring her to trust him first?
Whatever it is, this figure is so interesting I will feel really cheated if the show does not expand on his character.
Oh, and we agree that this “interview” is really just an argument, and that he is hurt, and trying to hurt her, yes?

***
By the way, I admire the way they don’t make the “First Love” Girl a villain; rather, they show that she is drawn in as a prop, and is very uncomfortable in that situation.

    Laughing
What we do know is that he laughs a lot at his own image … She scoffs bitterly at the thought of him being the Perfect Son in Law™, And he laughs … a sad longing? Or is there some twisted bitterness in his laugh? Or … is it just fun?
    ***

    ***
    So Childish
This for sure is some kind of light-hearted self-deprecation, right? And maybe he, like us, can see the fun in a pathetic manipulation, with the difference that he can laugh at it even when his own emotions (assuming he actually has them) are involved.

These were the precise two scenes that had me empathizing with Jeong-heon (I’m just gonna stick with TrotStar), not suspecting him…I wonder if we’re having different reactions to his “fake-ness?”

I am ready for him to become a villain, especially now that we know the First Love Lady is not as sweet as she’s made out to be–I mean how could she have been when she agreed to come on a dating variety show and taunt four men who had her as their first love–TrotStar may show a ruthlessness to match her.

However (하지만), I think he just chose fame over his girl and now regrets it. I do care that he’s in this position, but don’t need him to have any HEA to fix his dumb mistake–if anything that’s what I’m concerned about: that his character will just fall flat as neither complex nor villanous-enough-to-hate.

The scene you giffed next suggests that we’re supposed to feel sorry for him in his fame, but I don’t know that I will care to do that–but perhaps the production team can change my mind??

      3
      2

I am not saying I don’t emphasize with him. It’s just that we have seen that he is so, so sweet, in a pleasing-mother-in-law kind of way all the time, and we have also seen that it is a mask.
We have seen that FL has been very hurt by him, and she said that *everything* he does, is something he does for himself.
Some things about him, like his attempt to actually talk real to her, makes me really curious as to what he is. Is he maybe nicer than her, actually?
But I am also open for the possibility that he is not just a shitty ex, but also a total psychopath, the kind that would kill without remorse if it occurred to him to be a practical solution.

And as for the interview: They are both having an argument while pretending to have a conversation. They are both trying to be mean, not just him.

        2
        1

And and and in the gif, he is reaching out. When she totally rejects and ignores it, he tries to hurt her by talking about that first love as if there were never anyone but her in his heart.

          2
          2

Idk he was trying “to reach out” to her in the middle of an interview that’s being recorded, he couldnt find a better time?!

            1
            0

He has been trying to reach out all the time. But this was a moment of recognising what feelings she had, and trying to make her maybe accept an apology or something. Also, to emphasize that he knew her well. And to talk to her in a way only people who are close can do, mostly. “I can feel you are mad” … mostly you’d say a thing like that only to your closest friends and family.

    Glitch
This scene … he definitely is a victim, but also scary, here. (Also before my edit). And he is saved by our hero! Do you wonder how that will affect the situation?

BTW, have you considered her old assistant may have agreed to this job really to help her back? Maybe it is not a hostile take-over?

    4
    1

The assistant does seem to just be doing her job well and not undermining any thing.

Speaking of which, though, what about that scene in the “island kitchen” where Ki-baek gave her his own little sausages (he-he) to eat because she was clearly not taking care of herself–I totally shipped them in that moment. It’s clear that Ki-baek would rather be authentically sweet to the crew than fake sweet to the other reality show women.

      3
      1

I do think that he and the FL are going to be together, but then again … har ex might not be as mean as he is said to be, and she … she has actually, used Ki-baek’s help to be so, so mean to him, lured him in and abused his feelings and authenticity.
I have thought that maybe the Ex actually deserved to get the girl he was trying so hard to get. And maybe the girl really belonged with a skillful deceiver like him … it doesn’t have to be all bad, a lot of it is just professionalism, you could say.
And maybe Ki-baek deserved someone sho was more true to herself and to others. And maybe he needed to learn more about his family ‘s situation. Seems maybe he hasn’t considered what the family has done for him to be able to move up.

    Off-stage
Promicing to be dishonest, I guess. Because The Show Must Go On.
Sometimes it seems like the ruthless master manipulator is really our FL, and at other times … I mean, she is not a happy girl.

Thank you for this post focused on our Trot Star, Cecilie. I find this actor to be just as attention-grabbing in FS as he was in EAW. He’s at his best, IMO, when he sits on the line between villainy and self-preservation.

That his teeth are distracting when he’s still but not when he’s in motion suits his character here as well and emphasizes the amount of facade he’s had to cultivate–of course those are Joo Jong-hyuk’s actual teeth, I do believe…

    4
    1

I’m with you that Joo Jong-hyuk is a very good actor, as demonstrated from EAW to FS. He makes his asshole characters three dimensional – we may not sympathize with him but at least see beneath the surface of a man who may not be 100% bad. Hope one day he can become a lead.

Yes, thank you! I am trying to figure out what is up with the 2ML. I don’t trust him at ALL.

But when he sings “Honey Bunny” I will admit to a modicum of 😍.

It’s like the “Call of the Ajumma…” 😂

      2

    I don’t think he’s a psycho or anything.
Woo Ju has mentioned multiple times that he’s selfish and self-centered and I think that’s exactly his problem.

He’s trying to get back with Woo Ju because of how he feels about their past. Maybe he’s so obsessed with this perfect image that he can’t stand the thought of having an ex girlfriend that hates him. Or maybe he’s just sad he let a good woman go.
But wtv it is, it’s definitely about him and not her (or them).

I think the first love is going to be a villain, or at least not as “innocent” as she seems. There’s no way she went to a program like that as the “first love” and didn’t expect the hate from female contestants or the attention from the guys.

I’m not saying that she is bad or anything, but I don’t think she’s the “I don’t know anything, and I’m uncomfortable with this situation” type, otherwise she wouldn’t be there.

    2
    1

It could be that she longed for Ki-baek, and used this as a chance to get close to him, or, less romantic or cute, that she just longed for the days when she was the daydream of all the cream of boys amongst her classmates.
She is very pretty, but she might somehow have ended up in a corner, un-wooed.

        Ohh, that would make sense.

I’m watching it and laughing many times but once I finish the episodes I don’t think too much about them, I’m not in love with the main couple either… LR to me is like a soufflé which deflates quickly.
And there are too many scenes already seen in other shows.

ep13-evil-Ha-Joon-As-If-Possible

Today’s post on Crazy Love is about Ha Joon. Nooo, they’re not all going to be about Ha Joon, in fact, the last one already wasn’t about him (totally).

ANYWAY, this here post and the few comments below are gonna be about how Ha Joon can indeed act. Why, you might well ask, are you being defensive about this, Seon-ha?

Well, the answer is LYOL. Man, was that weekender a shitstorm of horrible acting, including from my man here.

So, as my Exhibit A, see above. OK, I’m joking a little…but look at Joonie trying to look all evil. Mwahahah–sweetie!!–ha–**cough**ha…do you need a hug after that drink-and-glare??

Srsly, I really do have some good examples of his acting in the comments.

But before we go there, a sound clip of delightful proportions. Below (and at this link) is our Oh Se-gi doing a little cheer for having forgotten his cell phone in Korea when heading off to the US. I don’t know what’s cuter, his jazz hands or the little inhaled chuckles that give him away to be the hamster he truly is.

In one of these examples, Ha Joon is upset. In the other, he just SAYS he’s upset. Did you forget what upset looks/feels like, my dear??

Top is Crazy Love, episode 12. It was really quite affecting.

Bottom is LYOL, near the end and better left forgotten.

It was really interesting to see the acting comparison. That last clip is just wow. Even without sound it’s emotionless. Do actors in weekenders basically give up by the end? I found that to be the case in the one that I watched (TRHC).

It’s such a different experience than watching c-dramas, which can be just as long as a weekenders, but usually maintain the momentum. They’re filmed in one shot and then dropped over a very short period (2-3 weeks), so they don’t get the week after week after week hammering by critics and netizens that weekenders do. It must be exhausting and discouraging to film a weekender. Just an early morning random stream of thought 😉

      1
      1

TRHC and LYOL were both trainwrecks in writing, I hear (I only saw the latter)…and the actors certainly didn’t do a lot to pull them out of the gutter.

BUT, and you know where I’m gonna go with this, my dear friend 😉, it’s not quite so for Beauty and Mr. Romantic!!!!! @oldawyer and I have been constructing a theory that BMR’s writer has conceived of this weekender as a series of chapters or “seasons,” each sort of self-contained, if still moderately incomplete.

After the set-up episodes, she’s been focusing on one storyline at a time as well–which could come to bite her in the derriere (because I miss some of of the second leads), but also seems to be working right now. The show is moving along at a clip as speedy as any 16-episode drama.

Anyway, I’m not saying it’s worth YOUR time, necessarily…but BMR has been worth mine!

PS: BMR’s lack of Ha Joon is, on the other hand, disappointing, I must say. But this smile sort of makes up for it (sort of):

It may happen yet! I recently bought a walking pad for my standing desk and quickly discovered it was a great way to watch k-dramas and exercise at the same time (although that was decidedly not the original intent, but at least I’m getting in more walking 😂)

PS. That gif is just adorable!

To me, he just looks exhausted in the second example. Maybe being in a long-running show with people who are not bringing their A-game is suuuuuper tiring?

Sarcastic, angry Ha Joon. Um. Let’s just say it’s my love language. It’s even better with his voice, but the little squints and lip curls are enough to give you the idea. If you’d like the full son et lumière, it’s Crazy Love, episode 14.

    CLASSIC.

My wife and I just finished watching CRAZY LOVE- it was really good- and I really thought that his acting was top notch.

But I agree that his acting was less so in the weekender- bad writing has a demoralizing effect and it was simply badly written.
